New Exoskeleton Lets You Carry A 200 Pound Load With Ease – Gizmo Watch

New Exoskeleton Lets You Carry A 200 Pound Load With Ease – Gizmo Watch: “I love it when life imitates fiction. And the latest fiction-inspired gizmo to make it into the real life is the all new HULC (Human Universal Load Carrier) exoskeleton that allows users to carry a load of upto 200 pounds while walking normally just like a superhero. Developed by Berkeley Bionics, the exoskeleton is made up of two powered anthropomorphic legs, a power unit, a small on-bead micro-computer and a back-pack like frame for mounting loads. The company claims that when in use, the HULC can reduce the oxygen consumption of the wearer by 5-10% in comparison to situations when walking without the aid. The effect is even more dramatic when the wearer is carrying a heavy load which is something that certainly will make it a lot easier for soldiers and hikers to carry all of their stuff without risking burnout. I guess the future really is here!

Mind "read" By Trained Computer – Gizmo Watch

Mind “read” By Trained Computer – Gizmo Watch: “To understand linguistic ability of a human mind, a computer has been trained to understand how words and mind images of words are linked. Researchers of Machine Learning Department of Carnegie Mellon University at Pittsbrugh have recently published their findings in journal Science. The computer can ‘read’ people’s mind by looking at their brain scans as they imagined or thought about specific words. The main aim of the research is to understand how and where brain stores information. This study might also help in treatment of language disorder and learning disabilities in people.”

Nanoribbons To Speedup Computer Chips – Gizmo Watch

Nanoribbons To Speedup Computer Chips – Gizmo Watch: “Nano chemists research team of Stanford University have successfully demonstrated that carbon nanoribbons can be used to make transistors which can be integrated into computer chips to increase speed with low heating. Recent study published online in Physical Review Letters and previous one in Science, looks set to revolutionalise new generation computer chips. The research team has demonstrated that nanoribbons made from graphene (a form of carbon made grahite) can be used to make field-effect transistors which are building blocks of computer-chips. This has been attempted before with wider nanoribbons but they worked only at low temperatures. Standford researchers lead by Hongjie Dai have made graphene ribbons less than 10 nanometers wide, which when integrated into transistor can work at room temperature as well.”

Experience Virtualized Reality With The Third Eye – Gizmo Watch

Experience Virtualized Reality With The Third Eye – Gizmo Watch: “If you are addicted to playing games that are set up in the virtual world, then without doubt subconsciously a part of you would be yearning to exist in that world. Though it isn’t exactly possible, but just to get a feel of it, Japanese designer Takehito Etani has conceived a devise called Third Eye. This video device is mounted onto the user’s head enabling the user to experience perception from outside of his body. It consists of a mono-eyed goggle with a 2-inch LCD monitor and a tiny surveillance camera held above the user’s head. Although the user may look like a Maritian, this kinda system enables the user to feel that he is the character moving about in a virtual space. Akin to that of a 3D video game in which the user controls and follows a given character from behind! Watch out for the video…….”

Cisco’s Holographic Video-conferencing Transmits Virtual Humans! – Gizmo Watch

Cisco’s Holographic Video-conferencing Transmits Virtual Humans! – Gizmo Watch: “Holograph is something humans have imagined and been fascinated with for centuries. Conceptually, a hologram or holograph is a virtual image of a human that talks, walks exactly like a human but it has no mass and occupies no space. It can pass through walls and it can appear anytime, anywhere at it’s wish. Holograms have been popping up through science fictions, myths, religions and even horror films as well only now to be transformed into reality! Cisco has demonstrated their new On-Stage TelePresence Holographic Video Conferencing. If you take a look at this video, the guy on the stage is actually interviewing the holograms of two guys in far away places!

This new technology produces high definition holograms that ‘capture the sweat on an eyebrow’, as said by one of the 250 spectators. Well, with this technology, your granny could walk into your home and have chat with you and could ‘vanish’ before you know it were her hologram image that traveled across the seas to meet you! Another ‘Star War’ concept transforming to reality….I’m just wondering how long it’s going to take for robot servant, time machine and Potter’s invisibility cloak to become a reality?

The World’s Largest Digital Display Sans ‘backlight’ – Gizmo Watch

The World’s Largest Digital Display Sans ‘backlight’ – Gizmo Watch: “Digital displays and backlights now go together like the proverbial bread and butter; it’s been a long while since we’ve seen a digital display that was devoid of any backlights. The Kraft Group aims to change all that with the World’s largest digital non emissive display they are putting up in a sports exhibit hall. The 40 foot long and 5 foot wide display, built on technology provided with Israel’s magink will be the largest of its kind. These displays are built of a cholesterol-like material, arranged in a DNA-like sequence. Change the arrangement of the DNA helix, and it changes the image visible by manipulating colors on the display. This allows moving displays with a frame rate as good as 60fps.

Kraft describes its displays as high on contrast and resolution, while being low on cost and energy consumption. A large savings in the cost and energy consumption must come from the ‘non-emissive’ attribute of these displays. Since these displays are non-emissive they can only be viewed in presence of ambient lighting. This simply means that these displays can work well in the day or under good lighting conditions, but for poor light conditions, lighting will be required.”
